Movie Pick: A Single Man

When I first heard about this movie, I kept seeing an ad for it only in magazines. The director was Tom Ford, and Colin Firth is wearing those iconic glasses, so I assumed it was just an advertisement for glasses masquerading as a movie ad. When I heard it was nominated for numerous awards, I was surprised and had to see it... and after months of procrastination, I finally did. It's a visual masterpiece- if you pause the movie at any point during the film, you can almost just capture a screenshot, print it, frame it, hang it on your wall.

A Single Man is a touching story about tragedy, death, life and love.

For the first time in my life, I can’t see my future. Every day goes by in a haze. But today I’ve decided, will be different.

Waking up begins with saying ‘Am’ and ‘now’.  For the past eight months, waking up has actually hurt. Cold realization that I’m still here slowly sets in. I was never terribly fond of waking up. I was never one to jump up and greet the day with a smile like Jim was.
Look around you. Most of these students aspire to nothing more than a corporate job. And the desire to raise Coke-drinking, TV-watching children who, as soon as they can speak, chant TV jingles and smash things with hammers.
I feel really alone most of the time. I’ve always felt this way. We’re born alone, we die alone. And while we’re here, we’re absolutely completely sealed in our own bodies. Really weird, kinda freaks me out to talk about it. We can only experience the outside world through our own slanted perception of it. Who knows what you’re really like- I just see what I think you’re like.

It may not be your immediate future, but it’s one we all share. Death is the future.

One trend I noticed from the Spring 2011 shows was black boots paired with white and cream clothes. This is one piece in your closet that can truly go from season to season, as seen on the runways of Helmut Lang and Jeremy Laing. So invest in some great black booties for fall and wear them into the spring!

Movie Pick: Saboteur

Alfred Hitchcock's film, Saboteur is about a man on the run, wrongly accused of a Nazi crime he didn't commit. A crime that ended with his best friend's death in a factory fire. Trying to track down the real culprit, he chases the elusive Mr. Frank Fry cross country to clear his name. In the process, he comes across the beautiful Patricia Martin who is bent on turning him in to the cops, but is slowly starting to believe he's innocent... and love starts to brew!

'To: Frank Fry', with a bunch of hundred dollar bills.

On the run

Hitching a ride.
"Hey buddy, hold the wheel while I animate this thing. I'm a nicotine addict."

Did you see a man on the loose?

Little does she know, he's hiding his handcuffs under the table.

Breaking free

Having a ball with some Nazis
"I know the result of that power you belive in. It killed my friend and it’s killing thousands like him. That’s what you’re aiming at, but it doesn’t bother you, I can see that. Because you really hate all people. Let me tell you something. The last 4 or 5 days I’ve learned a lot. I’ve met guys like you and I’ve met others. People that are helpful and eager to do the right thing. People that get a kick out of helping each other fight the bad guys. Love and hate, the world’s choosing up sides. I know who I’m with. And there are a lot of people on my side- millions of us in every country. And we’re not soft- we’re plenty strong. And we’ll fight standing up on our two feet and we’ll win. Remember that, Mr. Tobin. We’ll win no matter what you guys do, we’ll win if it takes from now until the cows come home."

Interior Design Inspirations

Today was a day filled with vacuums, detergents, gloves, and trash bags. Yes, cleaning day. As usual, whenever I do a total sweep of my house and weed out things I need from things I can live without, I start imagining what I'd do if I could totally redecorate. Some images popped into my head as inspiration, ones that I keep on the computer collected from websites, other blogs, and scanned images from books and magazines. Here are a few images that speak to me this season:

Anthology! a new design magazine

Anthology! Magazine was brought to my attention while surfing the Design *Sponge blog. If you love the things featured on their blog, you'll probably love this magazine. The thing that most excited me about the mag was in fact their promotional video, which I'm so glad I stopped to watch. The whole thing is done with stop motion animation, but features a real model and surroundings.  Its very cool, you need to watch it... and then go out and get the magazine in October.

A couple gorgeous photos from the September 2010 issue of W magazine featuring Georgia Jagger...

I love the vibrant red socks... they're so chic with the
